Description
Numbers 5 to 13 on Ditchling Road are a row of terraced houses built around 1815. They are constructed of stucco with tiled roofs for Nos 5-11 and a slate roof for No. 13. The buildings rise three storeys above a basement and feature a one-window range. The houses are designed as a symmetrical group, with a pediment above No. 9 and parts of Nos 7 and 5, as well as a first-floor verandah for Nos 5-11.
Access to the homes is via steps leading to flat-arched entrances, which have reeded doorcases, except for No. 13 that features plain pilasters. The entrances also have panelled reveals, overlights, and original panelled doors, except for the door to No. 7. The first and second floors have segmental bays with central mullions; the first-floor bay is offset, and the bays for Nos 3 and 13 are domed. The bays for Nos 5-11 extend into the verandah awning, which is supported by slim wooden columns and has a scalloped valence and cast-iron railings adorned with anthemion ornament, likely renewed. Nos 5 and 13 have balconies, while the buildings feature boxed eaves, hipped roofs, and chimney stacks on the ridge and hip.
The interior has not been inspected. The properties also have cast-iron area railings with spearhead finials. Although No. 7 was excluded from the listing in 1971, it appears to have been rebuilt in a manner that is broadly in keeping with the original design and is now included in the listing.
