Description

Numbers 28-31 are a row of terraced houses built in the early 19th century, featuring a stucco exterior. The roofs of Nos 28 and 29 are hidden by a parapet, while No. 30 has a slate roof and No. 31 has a tiled roof. No. 28 is three storeys with an attic over a basement, while Nos 29-31 are four storeys over a basement. Each house has two windows. The entries have flat arches and are framed by fluted pilasters, console brackets, and a cornice. The entries for Nos 28 and 29 are topped with a segmental pediment that has a raking cornice and a tympanum decorated with a sunburst. The door jambs and soffits are panelled, with plain overlights above each entry. Each entry is flanked by a segmental bay with tripartite windows; the bay for No. 28 is three storeys tall, while the others extend to full height. All windows are flat-arched. The first-floor balconies are enclosed with cast-iron railings; the balcony for No. 28 is supported by cast-iron brackets and features a railing with intersecting ogee arches and quatrefoils in bands. Each house has an entablature. Notable features include banded rustication on the basement and ground floor of No. 28, which also has an entablature on the second floor; a cornice and blocking course on Nos 29 and 30; and a denticulated cornice and blocking course on No. 31. There are chimney stacks on alternate party walls. The interior has not been inspected. The properties have cast-iron rails with fleur-de-lys and pikes on the stairs and area. Numbers 28-31 are part of a group with Nos 1-15 and 18-24.
