Description
The Former Phoenix Brewery Office, dated 1893, is a brewery office that may have originally served as a public house. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with dressings of gauged brick and terracotta, and features a slate roof.
The building stands two storeys high and has five windows on its main north front. The facade is treated continuously on three sides, facing Phoenix Place to the east and north, and Albion Street to the west, with chamfered corners. All openings are round-arched, featuring heads and keystones made of gauged red brick. The principal entrance, located at the north-west corner, is highlighted by an architrave of moulded brick and an acanthus keystone, with spandrels decorated with the Tamplin's Brewery Company monogram. Above the entrance, there is a panel displaying the date 1893, surrounded by garlands and strapwork.
The ground floor is divided into bays by blocked pilasters, has a panelled plinth, and features a continuous terracotta sill-band, except at the entrances. The east front has a fascia lettered 'PHOENIX BREWERY', while the north-east corner displays 'FOUNDED 1821' in garlands and strapwork. The north front includes 'TAMPLINS BREWERY COMPY LTD' and the date, while the west front has 'PHOENIX BREWERY'. A moulded terracotta cornice runs along the top of the ground floor, and the first floor mirrors this treatment with blocked pilasters, round-arched windows, an entablature, and a terracotta cornice. A pediment above the three central windows on the north front features a phoenix modelled in relief. The building has a hipped roof with corniced stacks.
Inside, the original mahogany lobby is located at the north-west entrance. The principal room on the first floor retains original architraves and panelled doors, a plaster frieze of arabesques, and a decorative plaster ceiling. The building was vacant at the time of the survey.
