Description

Number 31 is a terraced house located on Buckingham Road in Brighton, built in the mid-19th century. The house is constructed of stucco and has a tiled roof. It stands three storeys high and features a one-window range facing Buckingham Road. There is a flat-arched entrance that leads to West Hill Place, which includes an overlight, pilasters, and an entablature. A full-height canted bay window faces Buckingham Road and is flanked by rusticated pilasters on both the ground and first floors, with storey strings on each floor. The bay windows have typical quadrant corners on all floors. The return to West Hill Place has flat-arched windows with simple architraves on the ground and first floors, with the ground floor window nearest to Buckingham Road being blank. There is a lower extension to the west, also with a one-window range.

Although the interior has not been inspected, there is a plaque in memory of Aubrey Beardsley, who was born here. The property also features a stucco balustraded garden wall with square corniced piers. Number 31 is listed due to its association with Beardsley.
