Description

Numbers 2-15 and attached railings are a row of terraced houses, largely converted into guest houses, dating from the early 19th century. They are constructed of stucco, with varied roofing materials; slate roofs are present at Numbers 2-4 and 5, a slate roof that has been turned over at Number 14, tile roofs at Numbers 6-10 and 15, and the remainder have roofs obscured by a parapet.

The houses vary in height, with Numbers 11, 2, 10, 12a, and 5 being three or four storeys over a basement, while Numbers 3-4, 6-9, 14-15 are also four storeys over a basement. They generally have two windows each. All windows are flat arched. Stairs leading to the entries have overlights, with decorative glazing at Number 15. The paired entries are framed by fluted pilasters and console brackets. Segmental pediments with raking cornices and sunburst decoration sit above the paired entries of Numbers 2-3, 6-9, and 14-15. Doric order columns and entablatures frame the entrances to Numbers 4-5, 10-11, and 12-12A, although the entablature to Numbers 4-5 is partly missing. Tall, tripartite windows are positioned to the side of the entrances, with those at Numbers 2, 4-7, 9, 11, and 12a being canted, reaching the full height of the building except at Numbers 5 and 12a, which stop just short of the cornice. Numbers 3, 8, 10, 12, and 14-15 include full-height, segmental bays. The ground floor is rusticated, with banded rustication to Numbers 2-4 and 7-12a. A cornice with a parapet is present at Numbers 2, 4-9, 11, and 12a, with an interruption on Numbers 5 and 8. Number 12 has an attic with a blocking course. Storey bands are present at Numbers 3 and 10, and stringcourses at Numbers 2-4, 7, and 9. Balconies and cast-iron railings are located at the first-floor bay windows of Numbers 2-4, 6, 9, and 14-15, with decorative cast-iron brackets at Numbers 4, 9, and 14. Balconies and railings span the entire first floor at Numbers 11-12a, all supported by cast-iron brackets. Flat-arched dormers are visible at Numbers 2-4, 6-10 and 12a-15. A continuous pilastrade of Composite order runs up the elevations of Numbers 12-12a on the first and second floors, with a plain rectangular plaque flanked by console brackets marking the join between the two units. Stacks are situated on the alternating party walls. The interior has not been inspected. Railings are also present to the stairs and areas. These properties form a group with Numbers 18-24 and 28-31 New Steine.
