Numbers 113 and 114 and Attached Railings

Numbers 113 and 114 Marine Parade are a pair of terraced houses dating to approximately 1825, likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustin Busby. They are constructed of stucco with a slate roof covered in Turnerised tiles.

The houses are four storeys high, including a basement. Each has three windows on the front elevation, with the right return displaying a five-window range. The ground floor is treated with banded rustication. The main entrance to Number 113 features a round arched doorway with a fanlight. The entrance to Number 114 is on the right return, also round arched, and is set within a prostyle porch formed of fluted Doric columns, pilasters, and an entablature featuring a key pattern frieze. The porch’s flat arched side walls are glazed. The elevation of each house treats the bays as full-height, full-width segmental projections with flat arched windows. Horizontal bands mark the divisions between the second and third floors, and between the first and second floors of Number 114. Number 113 features a cornice and parapet pierced by a balustrade, topped by a rectangular panel terminating in volute brackets at each end. The cornice is missing from the main elevation of Number 114 but remains on the return, which has its own parapet. Both houses feature a two-storey porch with a balcony enclosed by cast iron railings on the ground floor of Number 113, and on the ground and first floors of Number 114. The first-floor balcony is supported by twisted cast-iron colonnettes, while the ground floor is supported by a wood and metal frame rising from the basement area. Camber-arched windows on the right return are blocked, although the first-floor corner window remains open. A canted bay rises to the first and second floors of the fifth bay to the rear. Chimneys are located on the party walls.

The interior of the buildings has not been inspected. Cast-iron railings are present at the stairs and in the areas. Numbers 113 and 114, together with Numbers 111-119, 122-133, and 133A Marine Parade, form a significant group within the context of Marine Square.
