Description
The Clarges Hotel (part) and attached railings are a pair of terraced houses dating to around 1825, likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustin Busby. The buildings are constructed of stucco with a slate roof. They are three storeys high with an attic, set over a half basement, and each has four windows. The main entrances have flat-arched doorways with overlights, with the entrance to No. 119 set within a shallow porch framed by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. To the side of each entrance is a full-height segmental bay incorporating three windows. All windows are flat-arched. The ground floor is treated with banded rustication. A continuous verandah with a metal concave roof extends across the first floor of both units, supported by Doric columns and entablature blocks, and sits above a ground-floor terrace; the verandah was later enclosed with glass in the 20th century. The sills of the second and third-floor windows project outwards. A storey band separates the second floor from the attic. The buildings feature an entablature, parapet, and metal railing. Three flat-arched dormers, dating to the 20th century, are incorporated into the hipped roof. The interior has not been inspected. These buildings, along with numbers 111-119, 122-133 and 133A Marine Parade, form an important group and contribute to the character of Marine Square.
