Description

A pair of terraced houses, built around 1825, and now forming part of the Clarges Hotel. They were likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustin Busby, and are similar in style to numbers 113 and 114 Marine Parade. The buildings are constructed from stucco, with a slate roof.

The houses are four storeys high, with a basement. Each has three windows on the main façade, and a six-window range on the left return. A prostyle portico with Doric columns fronts the entrance to number 115, incorporating responds and an entablature with a Greek key pattern. A round-arched entrance to number 116 has decorative glazing in the fanlight above. The facades are treated as full-height, segmental bays. All windows are flat-arched. The ground floor of each building has banded rustication, with a cornice above the first floor and a storey band above the second floor. A further cornice sits below the roof parapet, which is pierced with a balustrade and topped with a rectangular panel featuring a plain design, flanked by console brackets. This cresting is repeated above the parapet of the side return. A two-storey portico is supported by cast-iron colonnettes, and cast-iron railings run along the ground and first floors. A canted bay is present on the first floor of the side return, between the fourth and sixth windows. A first-floor balcony with cast-iron railings, supported by cast-iron brackets, is situated between the fourth and sixth window ranges.

The interiors were not inspected. There are cast-iron railings on the staircases and landings. Numbers 111 to 119, 122 to 133, and 133A Marine Parade form a significant group with Marine Square.
