Description

Whitehall is a Grade II* listed building located on the south-west side of Malden Road in Cheam, dating from around 1500. It is a continuous jetty house featuring a crown-post roof, and it likely has a fireplace and chimney from its early days. The exterior is covered in 18th-century painted weatherboarding that conceals close-studded framing. There are probable additions from the late 16th to early 17th century, including a porch, newel stair, and attics, as well as a 17th-century addition of two rooms at the rear.

The building stands two storeys high with an attic. It features a two-storey projecting gabled porch that has an old three-light leaded window on the first floor and an entrance on the ground floor with a moulded oak four-centred headed archway. The sides of the porch are open, and there is a moulded doorway with a four-centred head. The windows throughout the building are old leaded windows with diamond and hexagonal panes, including four-light windows on the ground and first floors, with a smaller two-light window further to the right. The roof is hipped to the right with a gablet and features plain stacks.

The rear elevation includes a projecting gabled wing on the left with a French window on the ground floor, a sash window on the first floor, and a three-light casement at the apex of the gable. There is a central small projection staircase "tower" with small casements and a gabled roof. The wing to the right has a roof parallel to the main range and features two storeys with various windows.

Whitehall is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 9 (odd) Malden Road, the garden wall to the north of Nos 1 and 3 Malden Road, the Rectory, garden walls, and laundry in the grounds of the Rectory, as well as Nos 45 to 57 (odd) The Broadway and Nos 1 to 25 (odd) Park Lane.
