Description
The underground room located at the rear of Number 5 on Malden Road in Cheam is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the late 17th century. It is the only surviving example of several similar chambers that were once found in Cheam. Accessed by a steep flight of steps, the rectangular space features walls made of limestone masonry and a brick barrel vaulted roof constructed in Flemish bond. There are round-headed arches in the center of each long wall and in the rear wall to the west. A further flight of steps leads down to a greater depth from the rear wall. Iron rings are fixed to the walls, suggesting the room may have been used as a food store for Cheam School when it occupied the Whitehall site.
