Description
The Old Malden War Memorial is a tall and attractive wooden structure that combines Classical and Gothic architectural styles. At the top, it features a Classical pediment with a tympanum that includes a carving of a crown surrounded by a laurel wreath, flanked by symbols of the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. Below this is a recessed shrine, where the back panel displays a bronze crucifix with a sculpture of Christ. Beneath the crucifix is a plaque that reads: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS. / BRETHREN PRAY FOR US." The left and right side panels are adorned with bronze plaques listing the names of the Fallen, organized by year and date. The shrine's platform holds two diamond-shaped flower pots, and the front edge of the platform features a plaque stating: "+ 1939 - 1945 WAR AND ALL WARS SINCE +." The entire memorial is supported by a Gothic style base with Corinthian pillars, which bear the inscription "1914 / 1918" in a square. The whole structure is set on a stone platform.
