Description
The Barnes War Memorial is a tall octagonal stone structure topped with a decorated gable featuring a sculpture of Christ. The memorial stands on a plinth, with each of its four faces displaying a decorated shield hanging from a flower, symbolizing the Instruments of the Passion. The front shield depicts the Crown of Thorns along with the Holy Sponge and Holy Lance; the right shield shows the hammer and tongs used in the crucifixion, accompanied by dice representing the casting of lots for Jesus's robes; the back shield features the Cross; and the left shield illustrates the pillar and whips, symbolizing the Flagellation of Christ.
This plinth is elevated on a two-step base, with inscriptions on the front faces: the top reads "1914 1919 and 1939 1945," while the bottom states "Our Glorious Dead." The memorial is set on a platform that extends over a two-step base, which flares out onto a paved area. The front face of the base includes the inscription: "Whose names are inscribed within the church / on the [??] south aisle. 1914 - 1919."
