Description
The Woodland War Memorial is located in front of the chapel at Woodland Cemetery. It consists of a tall stone pillar topped with a simple capstone, which rises from a two-stepped base. This base is set on the corniced top of a broad plinth, which itself stands on a three-stepped base.
A bronze panel is affixed to the recessed front of the plinth. The panel is designed to resemble a triple arcade in an ashlar wall, featuring two medallions above the arch columns. The left medallion displays the date 1914, while the right medallion shows 1919. The three round-headed arches bear the main dedicatory inscription, which reads: "ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF WOODLAND VILLAGE AND DISTRICT WHO SERVED / IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR."
The names of those commemorated are listed beneath the arches. At the bottom of the bronze panel, an inscription states: "FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD AND THE BENEFIT OF THIS LAND BE STEADFAST AND LASTING IN ALL THINGS WITHOUT END / AND I COMMAND ALL TRUE MEN TO HELP EACH OTHER RIGHT FOR TO DO AND RIGHT FOR TO RECEIVE."
