Description
The Grove bridge over Spurlswood Beck is a bridge dated 1843, built for Robert Surtees, with the date inscribed in Latin on panels on the parapet. It is constructed from tooled coursed squared sandstone, including some red stone, with ashlar dressings. The bridge features a segmental arch with recessed voussoirs beneath a roll-moulded dripmould. Well-cut panels are located above the arches and on the inner face of the parapet. The panels on the west side bear the inscription "EXTRUXIT ROBERTUS SURTEES AD DCCC XLIII" in Roman capitals, while those on the east side display a Surtees emblem and motto, which features three feathers, though the motto is eroded. The parapets extend outward towards the road and have overhanging rounded coping. Shallow pilasters flank the arch and rise to support the projecting parapet coping.
