Description
The Smelt Mill Chimney is a lead smelting mill chimney, likely built in the early 19th century for the 3rd Earl of Darlington. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings. The chimney is very tall and tapered, featuring a cornice and a blocking course. On the east side, there is a shouldered head leading to a low opening, while on the west side, there is a blocked rectangular opening located about 2 metres above ground level, which likely had a corbelled head beneath a flat stone lintel. The interior is stone-lined, except for a yellow brick barrel vault that forms a tunnel from the east opening.
