Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a medieval building with significant alterations and additions from the 17th and 19th centuries. Originally constructed by Walter de Merton, the founder of Merton College, Oxford, the church originally included a nave, chancel, and west tower. The flint walls of the chancel on the south and east sides still remain. In 1610, the nave and tower were rebuilt using red brick in English bond, featuring stone-dressed three-light Perpendicular windows in the nave. The church underwent restoration in 1863 by T G Jackson, who added a new, larger nave and chancel in 1875, which transformed the original structure into a south aisle and chapel. The new sections are also made of red brick and have tiled roofs. Inside, there is a notable 19th-century screen, pulpit, font, and stained glass. A heraldic panel dated 1611 can be found in the easternmost window of the south aisle, while a window by Webb is located in the north aisle.
