Description
Worcester Park, located on Salisbury Road in Ewell, is a house built in 1937 by the architectural practice Connall, Ward and Lucas. It is a notable example of the Modern Movement style, constructed primarily from mass reinforced concrete which has been painted. The house is two storeys and has two and a half bays, with the entrance bay set back on the right. The design incorporates continuous horizontal panels of transomed windows with casements, and further windows are located under a hood. The entrance bay features a doorway with a modern door, sheltered by a projecting canopy with a curved front corner that extends the full depth of the house; the first-floor windows of this bay are full-height. A parapet conceals the roof. The rear of the house features a doorway with a balcony above in the rear of the entrance bay, designed with the potential for the addition of stairs and a door in the window space. The central bay has shorter windows which create a stepped effect, while the doorway in the right bay has a modern door. The original design intended the house to be a four-bedroom family home, easily adaptable into two two-bedroom flats, one on each floor. Connall, Ward and Lucas was a leading architectural firm of the period, recognised for its use of reinforced concrete, a relatively uncommon practice in Britain at the time.
