Description

34 and 36 Temple Fortune Lane are a pair of houses designed in 1908 by Arnold Mitchell. They are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, alternating with two-brick-thick purple brick bands, and feature a brick plinth. The houses have tile hanging on the facing gables and a hipped tile roof over the entrance porches.

These two-storey houses have a symmetrical six-window range and are treated as double-ended hall houses, with cross wing gables set in from the returns and lateral ridge stacks aligned with the peaks of the facing gables. All windows are flat arched and feature two- and three-light wood casements that are authentically designed.

Each entrance is located on the center line of the gable, leading into a projecting porch made of brick piers with glazed side walls and a hipped roof, featuring a twelve-panel door of original design. The main roof extends across each facing gable, forming hipped cheeks. There is a loft light at each gable head, faced in tile and ending at the lintels of the first-floor windows, suggesting an oversail. The outer corners of the ground floor are marked by broken joints that suggest pilasters, which break the eaves and terminate in a sickle-like form.

The simple vernacular design is treated with great sensitivity regarding the arrangement, rhythm, and sizes of the windows, as well as the placement of other basic features. The proportions are broad and pleasing, enhanced by subtle detailing and high-quality materials, making this a work of exceptional architectural merit and interest.
