Description
This listing describes a pair of houses located at 25 and 27 Willifield Way in Hampstead Garden Suburb, built between 1908 and 1909 by Geoffrey Lucas. The houses are constructed of brick in English bond, painted except for the surround to the canted bay of No. 25 and its entrance, with the spandrels of the bays and oversailing gable heads finished in painted pebble dash featuring recessed edging that resembles quoin stones. They have hipped roofs covered with tiles, with swept and boxed eaves and angled brick stacks at the gable ends.
The buildings are two storeys high and feature a four-window range, with a bilaterally symmetrical elevation. The design includes a depth of composition, where the line of the outshut roofs in the outer ranges continues the line of the oversailing gable heads above each full-height bay, and the rear hipped wing mirrors the main roof line. The entrances are paired at the party wall, each featuring one sidelight and set beneath a hipped porch. On the first floor, there are two small casement windows flanking the party wall, positioned just off the axis of the entrances. The outer ranges project, each featuring a canted bay that terminates in a gable head. The casement windows are of an original design.
This pair of houses is the first in a group designed by Lucas, which includes Nos. 25-45 odd Willifield Way. The motifs of the gable-headed, oversailing dormer and canted bay are repeated in most of the units in this group.
