Description
These are two artisans’ cottages, built in 1908-9 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They are constructed with painted pebbledash walls over a brick plinth, and have a tile roof with swept eaves. The cottages are two storeys high and designed to resemble a single-ended hall house, mirroring the appearance of numbers 33 and 35 Temple Fortune Hill on the opposite side of the road. The intended bilateral symmetry of other buildings along the road was relaxed to create a smoother transition to the intersection with Willifield Way, known as ‘Crickmer Circus’. Some details vary between the cottages, including paired entrances with small windows on either side, the omission of one entrance porch, and the presence of a deep canted bay window on number 36. The right return side has two windows with weatherboards and a canted bay window near the front corner. A lateral stack (chimney) is located near the right corner, flush with the wall, and onto the return to number 36. A further stack is situated at the rear of the gable-facing roof. The cottages form a group with numbers 1-35 (odd) and numbers 2-36 (even) Temple Fortune Hill, which represents an important element of the original artisans’ quarter planned by Unwin. As at Asmuns Hill, the design emphasises the creation of a unified streetscape comprised of distinct building types.
