Description
A pair of cottages, built between 1909 and 1911, as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb and designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The cottages are constructed with painted pebbledash and weatherboarded half dormers, and have a tile roof with swept, boxed eaves that return to form gable cheeks. They are two storeys high and have a four-window facade. The style is Vernacular Revival. The entrances are on the side returns; the entrance to number 57 is accessed through a single-storey porch with a round brick arch, and the entrance to number 59 is under a bracketed porch. The cottages are bilaterally symmetrical above the party wall, featuring three-light casement windows paired on both the ground and first floors. The outer ranges have coupled square casements to both floors, with the upper floor windows set under boxed eaves. The ground-floor outer-range windows are lower than the central windows, suggesting a change in ground level. All windows have flat arches and are fitted with original casements. A central axial ridge stack projects from the party wall. A centrally-placed half dormer with eaves returns complements the architectural style commonly found in the Suburb. Numbers 57 to 111 Willifield Way (odd numbers) were designed by Parker and Unwin as part of the original artisans’ quarter, and the group represents a significant and complete example of a Parker and Unwin streetscape.
