Description
Nos. 82 and 84 Willifield Way are artisans' cottages built in 1909, designed by George Hubbard and Arthur Walter Moore for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, with input from Parker and Unwin. The cottages feature painted rendering over brick, with weatherboarding at the peaks of the doubled facing gables, which are a prominent element of the design and can also be seen at Nos. 98 and 100 at the far end of the Green. They have tile roofs with swept eaves and exposed rafter ends, tile kneelers, and tile-hung dormers at the center of each return. The buildings are two storeys high and have a two-window range, showcasing a Vernacular Revival style that is bilaterally symmetrical. The entrances are located near the outer corners, set within recessed, segmental-arched porches. A pair of tripartite windows flank the party wall, with double windows on the axis above. All windows originally feature a 6 X 6 or 4 X 4 sash design. There is an axial stack on the front slope leading to a hipped rear wing. This pair of cottages is part of a larger group designed by Hubbard and Moore for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, which includes Nos. 70-124 Willifield Way, and the units are roughly symmetrical around the recessed Willifield Green.
