Description

These are a group of artisans’ cottages dating from the early 20th century, designed by George Hubbard and Arthur Walter Moore for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, in collaboration with Parker and Unwin. The cottages are constructed of rendered brick, with tile hanging on some elevations, and have tile roofs with swept, boxed eaves, tile kneelers, and ridge stacks on party walls and gable ends. They are arranged as a ten-window range, exhibiting bilateral symmetry. The overall style is Vernacular Revival. A projecting wing, centrally positioned, features a two-span facing gable containing two windows. The first and second, and ninth and tenth window ranges also project and are covered by single gables, forming an outshut on each return. Recessed ranges between these projecting sections are covered by a lean-to roof supported by plain uprights and brick piers on the party walls. The entrances to numbers 88 to 94 are located under these porches, while the entrances to the end units are set within round-arched recesses in the corners of the building. Most windows are flat-arched, featuring original design double and triple sash windows with weatherings. The original sashes in the right-hand window of number 96 have been replaced with casements. Dormers are present on both returns, the one nearer the front corner having a flat roof and a tripartite window; it is tile hung to the rear with a larger, gable-headed, tile hung dormer. These cottages are part of a larger group, numbers 70 to 124 Willifield Way (even), and are roughly symmetrical around the recessed Willifield Green.
