Description
These artisans' cottages were built in 1909 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb development, designed by George Hubbard and Albert Walter Moore. They are a group of six cottages, numbers 110 to 116 Willifield Way, and represent a variation on an existing design found at numbers 74-80 and 102-108. The cottages are constructed with painted rendering on the upper walls, a brick plinth, and a steeply pitched tile roof with swept eaves and exposed rafter ends along the gutter fascia. They are arranged in a bilaterally symmetrical layout around a central party wall. The design is in a Vernacular Revival style. The cottages are two storeys high, with a six-window front. The entrances to the end units are set back and return. The entrance to number 110 is within a round-arched recess, the entrance to number 104 is also under a round-arched porch, and the entrance to number 112 has been altered. All other openings have flat arches, the windows incorporating weatherings. A broad, gabled dormer window spans ranges three and four, while smaller gabled half dormers are positioned over ranges one and six. The first-floor windows are double-sash windows with a 4x4 or 6x6 pane design, with those in ranges two and five being wider than the others. The ground-floor windows are tripartite (three-part) with sashes of a 4x4 or 6x6 pane design. Single windows are located beside the entrances on the returns, each with a two-window range and double 4x4 sashes. Axial ridge stacks are present on the party walls between numbers 110 and 112, and between 114 and 116. These cottages were part of a larger development designed for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, comprising numbers 70 to 124 Willifield Way.
