Description
Numbers 38, 40, and 42, with their attached garden wall, are cottages built in 1910 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb development, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The cottages are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a tile roof featuring boxed eaves. The design is an L-shape, angled to span the corner with Willifield Way and defining the southwest corner of Willifield Green. They have two storeys, with some sections rising to three storeys.
The architectural style is Vernacular Revival, notable for the deliberate asymmetry of the window openings. These openings are flat arched and set within brick relieving arches. The entrances to numbers 38 and 42 are sheltered by bracketed porches. A wall rises from the porch at number 38 to a three-storey inset, topped with a hipped dormer featuring weatherboarded returns. A broader three-storey inset is centrally located along the long range, finished with a gabled hip. The gable end facing Asmuns Hill has a two-window range extending over three storeys; the return of number 38 shows a three-window range with two dormers. The rear elevation of numbers 40 and 42 displays an eight-window range with three dormers. Four axial brick stacks frame the inset sections, with the stack at number 38 being particularly prominent. The cottages are part of a significant group including numbers 113-133 (odd) and 126-156 (even) Willifield Way.
