Description

Nos. 126, 128A, and 128B on Willifield Way are artisans' cottages built in 1910 by architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The cottages are constructed of red brick with Flemish bond, featuring segmental arched openings except for the gable-headed half dormers, which have weatherboarded heads and flat arches. The design follows the pattern of a single-ended hall house, with a four-window range for the hall and a two-window range for the gable-facing crosswing. The building stands two storeys tall and the crosswing aligns with the long range of Nos. 38, 40, and 42 Asmuns Hill, closing the view along Willifield Green into Willifield Way.

The hall range includes half dormers and gutters that are suspended across the eaves gap. There is a polygonal ground-floor bay in the first range with two entrances to the right, and an entrance to the crosswing unit located in a recessed porch with canted sides. The left return of the hall has a two-window range. A weatherboarded single-storey wing projects from the rear of No. 128A, with an outshut for Nos. 128A and 128B featuring two tiers of dormers—those on the first floor have metal roofing, while the loft dormers are hipped.

A notable aspect is the picturesque view of the rear of the group from Asmuns Hill, which reflects the architects' intention for it to be visible from the pavement due to the site's slope. There is an axial ridge stack at the gable end of No. 128A and another on the party wall between Nos. 128B and 126. This building is part of an important group designed by Parker and Unwin, which includes Nos. 113, 123-133 (odd), 12d-156 (even) Willifield Way and Nos. 38, 40, and 42 Asmuns Hill.
