Description

The house at 31 Asmuns Hill is a detached property dating from around 1910, designed by the architectural office of Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. It is built with painted pebbledash, featuring flared weathering above a brick plinth in a Flemish bond pattern. The roof is tiled, half-hipped, with broad eaves that overhang a pair of full-height bays. The design incorporates a sweeping, boxed eaves detail and tile gable kneelers.

The house’s arrangement plays on the design of paired stair-towers seen elsewhere in the Hampstead garden suburb; however, these bays are unusually narrow and feature slightly angled returns. The overall effect suggests two columns supporting a pediment, and the roof form is akin to that used by A. J. Penty in Temple Fortune and Arcade Houses on the Finchley Road. A two-window return shows two half-dormers with hipped roofs. The original entrance is set under a porch on the left return, with a matching half-hipped dormer above. A large dormer to the rear is a later 20th-century addition. The original windows are casements. The group of properties around Asmuns Hill represents a particularly significant example of a complete Parker and Unwin streetscape.
