Description

98 and 100 Willifield Way are artisans' cottages built in 1909, designed by George Hubbard and Arthur Walter Moore for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, with input from Parker and Unwin. The cottages feature painted rendering with weatherboarding at the peaks of the two-span facing gable, which is a prominent element of the facade. The roof is tiled, with swept eaves and tile gable kneelers, and includes half dormers on the returns.

These two-storey cottages have a three-window range and are built in the Vernacular Revival style, closely resembling Nos. 82 and 84 Willifield Way. The design is bilaterally symmetrical, except for the single window above the entrance to No. 100; the other first-floor windows are paired and all feature original 6 X 6 sash windows. The entrances are located near the outer corners and are set within segmental-arched, recessed porches. The flanking party wall has a pair of tripartite windows with original 6 X 6 and 4 X 4 sash designs. The main elevation has weatherings to the windows and a painted brick plinth. An axial stack is located on the front slope of the hipped roof at the rear of the facing gables. This building is part of a group designed by Hubbard and Moore for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, which includes Nos. 70-124 Willifield Way, and the units are arranged symmetrically around the green.
