Description

33 and 35 Temple Fortune Hill are artisans' cottages built in 1908-1909 by architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They feature a painted pebbledash finish over a brick plinth and have a tiled roof with swept eaves and exposed rafter ends. The cottages are two storeys high and have a three-window range, designed as a single-ended hall house that differs from similar structures at Nos. 14 and 16, and 33 and 35 Temple Fortune Hill. The right range has a facing gable, creating a strongly asymmetrical elevation, which is unique in this sequence. This design, along with its mirror image at Nos. 34 and 36 opposite, marks the transition to 'Crickmer Circus', the intersection of Temple Fortune Hill and Willifield Way.

No. 33 features two eyebrow windows tucked under the eaves, while No. 35 has a long strip of first-floor casements, with weathering that spans the width of the facing gable, emphasizing the horizontal design. A canted projection at the party wall supports an entrance porch that spans the front of the block, which transitions into a flat roof over deep canted bays at the far ends. There is a two-light catslide dormer positioned high on the front slope of the roof, straddling the party wall. All openings are flat arched, with original design casements; the windows on the left return have weatherings, and those on the first floor run continuously across the end gable, echoing a motif from the main facing gable of No. 35. There is an axial stack on the left corner of No. 33 and another on the right return and rear of the gable-facing roof.
