Description
Number 243 (Nail Cottage) and Number 245 are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century, with later alterations and additions. They are constructed of brick laid in Flemish garden wall bond, featuring stucco dressings. The buildings have a gabled roof covered with old tiles, which has had its eaves renewed, and they include a squat brick cross-axial stack and an end stack. Each house has a single-unit plan.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. A top dentilled brick cornice runs along the roofline. Each entrance is flanked by pilasters and has a frieze and cornice, topped with a Greek-Revival style gable above 20th-century doors. On the ground floor, there are two windows with sills and stucco wedge lintels above 8/8 sash windows. The first floor features windows with timber lintels above 4/8 sash windows. A fire mark from the County Insurance Company is located at the centre of the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
