Description

The Poplars is a house with origins dating from the late 17th century or 18th century, featuring extensive alterations from the early 19th century and early 20th century. It has rainwater heads dated 1691 and 1761. The building is constructed of brick with a roughcast facade and has a gabled Welsh slate roof with red ridge tiles, a projecting brick end stack, and a large stack at the rear. There is a tile roof to the left with a brick lateral stack. The layout consists of a three-unit plan with a wing at the left end.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a three-window range. A top dentilled brick cornice extends over the central gable. The entrance is located to the right of the centre, accessed by four stone steps, and features an overlight with glazing bars above a 20th-century door. To the right of the entrance is a large canted bay window, while to the left is a window with a tripartite casement and a tall narrow light at the left end, all fitted with early 20th-century leaded glazing. On the first floor, there is a window in the centre and another at the left end, both with 20th-century cross-casements, as well as a higher window to the right under a gablet with bargeboards. The central gable contains a blocked Diocletian window.

The wing features a top modillioned brick cornice. It has a window with a tripartite casement that replaced a 20th-century garage entrance at the left end, along with a tall narrow light and a narrow horizontal light at the right end, topped by a window with a cross-casement, all also with leaded glazing. The interior has not been inspected.
