Description

These houses, numbered 18, 20, and 22 Temple Fortune Lane, were built between 1908 and 1910 to designs by Edward Palser. They are part of a group that forms the centerpiece of Palser Square, which lines three sides of the Green. The buildings are two storeys high and are designed in a vernacular revival style, giving the impression of three detached houses with hipped roofs at the front, while their ridges sit over the recessed common ranges.

The entrances are located in the recessed range between Nos. 14 and 16, at the inside corners of the projecting wings, although they have been somewhat altered. No. 18 features a round-arched entrance on the left, while No. 20 has a similar entrance on the right, and No. 22's entrance has been converted into a window. Most other openings are flat arched, with mullioned and transomed windows that have leaded casement lights designed authentically.

The entrances are set under projecting porches, with those for No. 18 on the right and No. 22 on the left also designed authentically. Each large projecting range has a full-height rectangular bay with chamfered corners, flanked by square lights. The top of each bay extends beneath the front hip, with returns continuing below to swept eaves. The entrances to the outer ranges are set in lean-to porches, with roofs parallel to the main roof. Each unit has a first-floor dormer above and a stack at the rear. Stacks are located on the inner slopes of the outer projecting ranges and on the right slope of each unit, with an additional stack on the left, rear slope of one unit. No. 20 features a door of original Tudor design at the left-hand entrance. This group of houses is part of a striking ensemble that includes Nos. 12-32 (even) Temple Fortune Lane, collectively known as Palser Square.
