Description

This is a house located at 1 Meadway, built around 1912 according to designs by Matthew Dawson. It features painted render with incised circles on the first-floor band, tile flats, and pantile dressings, while the first-floor sill band and stack are made of brick. The roof is covered with tiles. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window range in a Vernacular Revival style.

A gable-facing half dormer is positioned on the central axis, aligned with an unusual axial stack set at the rear of the ridge line. On the ground floor, there is a canted bay window on the left side, with a balcony above that has a wood balustrade of an original design. The eaves have a distinctive treatment, finishing with inverted ridge tiles that create a serrated effect. The lead guttering is arranged in an ornamental pattern.

The entrance is located in a single-storey, hipped porch on the left return, featuring a lintel set in pantiles that suggests strigilation, along with a tile flat keystone and Tuscan antae flanking the door. The gable returns include round-arched recesses and a loft window. A lean-to extension at the rear appears to be part of the original design.

Overall, this house is an exceptional design, with proportions and features that mimic the qualities of vernacular buildings, suggesting a late medieval house layout, with a stack inserted to create a lobby entrance and a two-cell plan. The charm lies in the contrast between its apparent symmetry and the varied details, along with restrained ornamental touches formed from constructional features like the tile flats.
