Description
Nos. 26 and 28 Hampstead Way, along with No. 5 Meadway, are houses built around 1909-1910. They feature unpainted pebbledash with timber framing and have dressings made of tile flats and brick. The buildings sit on a brick plinth with stretcher and mixed bonds and have tiled roofs of various forms.
These two-storey houses have a canted butterfly plan, designed in response to the 'Baillie-Scott Corner' opposite, which includes No. 22 Hampstead Way and Nos. 6, 8, and 10 Meadway. The range of buildings runs across the corner and includes four windows with full-height polygonal bays and hipped roofs. There is a short wing that returns to Meadway, featuring an outshut roof with two dormers. The façade facing Hampstead Way has a two-window range. All windows are flat arched with casements of an original design.
The entrances are set in shallow porches, with round diaphragm arches on Nos. 28 and 5, and a segmental diaphragm arch on No. 26. The bays are repeated on the short returns, and angled stacks highlight the picturesque details. There is a variety of dormers, contributing to a lively and changeful elevation that makes full use of the prominent corner site. This design should be considered in relation to the long range opposite designed by Baillie Scott, as well as the smaller butterfly planned buildings at 4 Meadway and 113 Hampstead Way. Although Baillie Scott was originally commissioned for the design of all four blocks, he completed only one. Nonetheless, these buildings possess significant architectural merit and contribute greatly to the townscape.
