Description

No. 4 Meadway is a house built around 1908-1910, featuring painted pebbledash with a brick plinth and stacks, along with tile-hung and timber-framed gables. The roof is tiled. The house has two storeys and consists of one main block parallel to Hampstead Way, with a smaller wing attached at an oblique angle, creating a broad V-shaped plan suitable for the corner site.

The entrance is located between brick spur walls that support a timber-framed, gable-facing oriel. It features a plank door with decorative hinges of original design. To the left, there is a two-light half dormer with a bay. The gable-facing side has a one-window range towards Meadway, which is tile-hung at the top and includes a shallow canted bay. The double-facing gables towards Hampstead Way are also tile-hung at the tops, with a broad stack framed by windows.

The rear elevation has a four-window range that is clearly visible from Meadway. The arrangement of features on the returns and rear creates a picturesque silhouette with dormers, bays, and a variety of materials and finishes. The overall design is somewhat similar to No. 113 Hampstead Way to the north, with variations in small-scale features. This house is part of a group that includes No. 22 Hampstead Way and Nos. 6, 8, and 10 Meadway, as well as Nos. 28 and 28 Hampstead Way and No. 5 Meadway. The design of these four blocks was initially assigned to M H Baillie Scott, who ultimately only completed No. 22 Hampstead Way. However, all units possess significant architectural merit and contribute to the townscape.
