Description

This listing describes a pair of quasi semi-detached houses located at 14 and 16 Temple Fortune Lane, built between 1908 and 1910 to the designs of Edward Palser. They are part of a group that includes matching houses at 24 and 26 Temple Fortune Lane. The buildings are constructed with a similar range of materials as No. 12 in the vicinity.

Each house is two storeys high and features a one-window range on each gable-facing block, with an additional one-window range on each side of the party wall, set in a recess. The design loosely resembles a double-ended hall house, with gable-facing crosswings and a 'hall' range that contains the stair and entrances. Each half of the pair has two entrances: one is set in a round-arched, recessed entrance porch, while the other is a flat-arched entrance located in a lean-to extension at the rear, with its roof line matching the main gable.

The windows on the inside returns of the crosswings include rectangular bays with chamfered corners on the ground floor of each gable, flanked by square lights and a broad window above. The leaded casement lights are of an authentic design, featuring mullions and transoms. There are square chimney stacks on the inside roof slopes of the projecting ranges, with one stack on the rear slope of each unit and another at the outer rear corners. The outshut roofs on the returns have hipped dormers.

The proportions of the design draw from vernacular architecture but have been varied to emphasize the crosswings, making the hall appear smaller. This pair of houses is part of a notable group formed by the houses at Nos. 12-32 (even) Temple Fortune Lane, collectively known as Palser Square.
