Description
The lamp post outside 8 Mercer Street is a gas street light, likely dating from around 1908. It features a cast iron 'Trafalgar' column topped with a Windsor lantern.
The lamp post has a cast iron column with a tapered, circular pedestal set on a square base. The pedestal includes moulded collars at irregular intervals and has an applied registration plaque with the number 7507. Rising from the pedestal is a fluted 'tulip' shaft that ends in a circular collar, which has a single ladder rest and a four-legged frog that supports the Windsor lantern. The lantern itself is square with tapered glazing panels and a copper casing. Its tent features oak leaf decoration at the corners, along with a spike and cap finial. Inside the lantern, there is a six-mantle burner, an enamel reflector, a Horstmann control clock, and a Comet igniter.
