Description
Nos. 6 and 8 Mercer Street are artisan dwellings built around 1908 by the Mercers' Company Estate. The buildings are constructed from ceramic red brick, with rubbed red brick and stone dressings, and feature a slate roof. Designed in a Free Style "Wrenaissance," they exhibit good detailing. The structure has three storeys, a basement, and a dormered mansard roof. It is five windows wide and includes a two-storey semicircular arched throughway on the right.
The central staircase doorway is framed by a stone Gibbs surround, adorned with lush consoles and a scrolled open pediment that frames a cartouche-key. The windows are flush framed segmental arched glazing bar sashes, and on the left-hand bay, there is a shallow through-storey canted bay that is recessed in a splayed reveal and features glazing bar sash lights. Above the entrance, the partially open staircase leading into the attic is highlighted by an enriched stone-framed oeil-de-boeuf on the first floor, with openings on the second floor and attic that have rubbed brick dressings swelling into Tuscan reveal-columns. The building is finished with a stone frieze and a bracketed cornice, and there are spearhead area railings.
