Description

Nos 80 to 84 on Brook Street are a block of houses built between 1910 and 1912 by Maurice Hulbert. They are designed in a Renaissance style, featuring finely pointed warm red brick with lavish stone dressings and facings. The building has a symmetrical layout with facades facing Gilbert Street, Brook Street, and a blind side to Binney Street. It stands four storeys high, with a basement and a steep, slated mansard roof that includes dormers and prominent chimney stacks. The ground floor is ashlar faced and channelled, while the centrepieces of the main elevation, particularly on Brook Street, are also ashlar faced and pedimented, adorned with giant pilasters. The corners are splayed and feature rusticated stone quoins. Windows are framed with architrave surrounds, and those in the Gilbert Street centrepiece are arranged as tripartite pairs with columns and an entablature. There is a single-storey wing extending north with three windows. The property is further enhanced by ornate cast iron area railings.
