Description

Nos 17 and 19 Queen Anne's Gate are a pair of terraced houses built around 1700-1704 as part of the original Queen Square development. They were constructed together with No 15. The houses are made of brown brick with red dressings and feature slate roofs. They stand three storeys tall with a basement, and No 17 has original dormers in its steeply pitched, hipped roof, while No 19 has a later dormered mansard roof. Each house has three windows across the front, plus a blind half-window. The entrances are located on the right and accessed by steps, featuring exceptional wooden doorcases with panelled pilasters on pedestals, along with canopy cornice-hoods that have pendant finials adorned with intricate foliage carvings.

The windows have flush framed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged red brick arches, with those on the first and second floors displaying carved mask keystones. Stone plat bands run over the ground and first floors, continuing from No 15, and there is an original wooden modillion eaves cornice. No 17 has pedimental leaded casement dormers. The properties are also complemented by wrought iron area railings with flambé torch finials. The interior of No 19 remains largely intact, while No 17 has undergone some alterations. Both houses feature cut and carved string staircases with twisted balusters. They are part of an exceptional group of Queen Anne houses.
