Description

A pair of terraced town houses at 21 and 23 Queen Anne's Gate, built circa 1700-1704 as part of the original Queen Square development. Later alterations occurred in the late 18th and early 19th century. The houses are constructed of brown brick with red brick window dressings to the second floor, and have slate roofs. They are four storeys high, with a dormered mansard roof to number 21 and a basement level. Each house has five windows wide, plus two blind half windows.

The central doorways are approached by steps. Number 21 features a later stucco door surround with consoles and cornice, while number 23 retains its original carved wooden doorcase, which includes remarkable canopy cornice-hood with pendant finials intricately carved with foliage. The windows are flush framed, with bar sashes under flat gauged red brick arches to the second floor; recessed sashes are on the top floor. Carved mask keystones are present above the ground and first floor windows. Stone plat bands are above the ground and first floors, and a parapet with coping sits atop the building. Wrought iron area railings include flambé torch finials.

The interior of number 23 remains largely intact, while number 21 has undergone later 18th and early 19th century alterations, though some original panelling remains. Both houses retain cut and carved string staircases with twisted balusters. The buildings are part of an exceptional group of Queen Anne houses.
