Description
No 1 Berkeley Square is a house dated 1901, designed by R G Hammond. It is a small corner building faced in Portland stone, featuring Jacobethan and Renaissance details. The structure has five storeys and a leaded mansard roof. The corner is canted, resembling a turret, and topped with a polygonal, domed cupola. The ground floor windows have been altered, and there is a projecting entrance to the left. The windows are closely set, flat arched, and have crisply carved surrounds with shallow relief panels beneath the sills, along with a cast iron balcony on the first floor. The parapet is swept and intricately carved between the dies. The building occupies a prominent corner site at Hay Hill and is part of the tightly knit picturesque block that includes Nos 1 to 3.
