Description
Nos 52 and 52A are town houses built around 1750 to 1770, located on a corner site with Charles Street in Berkeley Square, Westminster. The buildings are constructed of blackened brick and rise four storeys with a basement, featuring pedimented dormers in a slate mansard roof. A brick plat band is present at the first floor, along with a stuccoed sill band. The ground floor showcases a wooden Ionic columned doorcase with pediments on either side of the central entrance, which has revealed sashes beneath flat gauged brick arches. A stone cornice is located at the third floor level, topped by a parapet with coping.
The return section on Charles Street (No 52A) consists of three storeys with two tiers of dormers in a slated mansard roof. It features two full-height canted bays, each with three sashes per floor, and a two-storey extension with two windows on the left. The doorcase here has a stone architrave with a cornice on consoles, a panelled door, and a patterned fanlight.
Inside No 52A, there is a cut string stone staircase adorned with a delicate wrought iron balustrade. Both properties have cast iron area railings with urn finials, with No 52 featuring wrought link extinguishers. The interior of No 52 includes a staircase with turned balusters, which is screened by Ionic columns on pedestals, creating a pilaster rhythm around the hall above the dado. These buildings are part of the best surviving terrace of town houses in the square.
