Description
47 Berkeley Square is a house built in 1750 and overhauled in 1891 by George and Peto. It is constructed of Portland stone and has been refaced in an early Italian Renaissance style. The building features four storeys, a basement, and a slated mansard roof with dormers, along with four windows. The ground floor has two arched openings, with the entrance to the right, which includes crisply carved low relief decoration on the pilasters and entablature. There is an iron grille on the small square-headed window to the right of the entrance. The first floor windows are adorned with similarly decorated pilasters and alternate semicircular and triangular pediments; the left windows have small balconies, while the right ones feature simple balustrades. The second floor windows are pilastered and have cornices. An entablature with a carved frieze of putti and swags is located at the third-floor level. The area railings are original to the 18th century house and include wrought iron lamp standards. Inside, the property is fitted out in Renaissance style, featuring chimney pieces and panelling. There is an original stone open string staircase leading to the piano nobile, with stone treads that have bracket ends and a fine wrought iron balustrade that scrolls down to the foot with gilded ram's heads. This house is part of the best remaining terrace of townhouses in Berkeley Square.
