Description
Nos 45 and 46 Berkeley Square are a pair of townhouses built around 1744-1750, showcasing fine ashlar stonework. No 45 was designed by Henry Flitcroft, while No 46 is attributed to him. No 45 is taller, featuring four storeys, a basement, and dormers in a slated mansard attic. In contrast, No 46 has three storeys, a basement, and pedimented dormers. Both houses have four windows across their façades, with rusticated ground floors and doorways framed by Gibbs surrounds. The upper floors feature glazing bar sash windows set in architrave surrounds, with the first-floor windows adorned with pulvinated friezes, pediments, and stone baluster balconies. The buildings also have bracketed cornices and parapets, along with wrought iron railings topped with urn finials, overthrows, link extinguishers, and lamp holders.
Inside, both houses boast impressive interiors with contemporary plasterwork and chimneypieces. No 46 has a notable ironwork staircase, while No 45 features an Ionic columned hall that leads to a staircase, which is overlooked by a second-floor gallery that is top-lit. The first-floor drawing rooms of No 45 were redecorated between 1763 and 1767 by Sir William Chambers for Clive of India after he purchased the house. These townhouses are part of the best surviving terrace sequence in the square and hold exceptional historical interest.
