Description
No. 44 Berkeley Square is a Grade I listed town house built between 1742 and 1744 by William Kent for Lady Isabella Finch. The building is constructed of brown brick and features three storeys, a basement, and later dormers. It has three symmetrical windows. The ground floor is characterized by rusticated stone quoins and a boldly rusticated stone entrance. The stone architraves on the piano nobile and second floor are adorned with pediments, with the central one supported by consoles and featuring blind balustrades linked by a flat band. A bracketed stone cornice runs beneath the dormers. The property includes wrought iron railings and an overthrow with linked extinguishers and lampholders.
The interiors are magnificent, particularly noted for their baroque spatial handling of the spectacular staircase. The first-floor bedroom and boudoir at the rear were redecorated in the late 18th century, likely by Henry Holland. The building was restored and redecorated in 1963 by John Fowler, with consulting architect Philip Jebb, who also designed the Gothick corridor flanking the garden and the garden pavilion. No. 44 is part of the best surviving terrace of town houses in the square and features an interior of exceptional quality.
