Description
51 Berkeley Square is a town house built around 1750, featuring a stucco exterior with some early and mid-19th century alterations. The building has four storeys, a basement, and dormers with pediments. The ground floor showcases an original stone architrave doorcase with a bracketed cornice supported by consoles, along with a single wide window that has been altered. The first floor windows are set in moulded architraves with cornices, while the second floor windows feature mid-19th century eared architraves that are segmental headed and keyed. Above, there is a balustraded parapet over a moulded cornice, and a continuous early 19th century cast iron balcony with spearhead area railings.
Inside, the property includes a groin vaulted vestibule with architrave doorcases, pulvinated friezes, cornices, and mahogany doors. There is a cut string stone staircase with an original cast iron Chinese-Chippendale balustrade. The front room on the first floor is designed as a library, complete with pilastered bookcases above the dado. The rear room features a moulded dado rail and panel framing, as well as late 18th century marble chimneypieces. This house is part of the best surviving terrace of town houses in Berkeley Square.
