Description
Nos 7 and 7A Grafton Street is a terrace house built around 1772 as part of a row designed by Sir Robert Taylor. The building is constructed of stock brick and has a slate roof. The facade was largely rebuilt in a neo-Georgian style between the wars and features three main storeys with a parapeted attic above the cornice, a projecting timber shop front, and a first-floor show window. To the right, there is a round-arched house entrance with an original decorated fanlight, and to the left, an entablatured entrance to No 7A. The plain rear elevations include a canted bay and remain unaltered.
Inside, the building retains a significant amount of Taylor's original work. The doorway to No 7 leads into an original barrel-vaulted corridor with decorative plasterwork, which connects to a top-lit stairwell with an apse, featuring a scrolled wrought iron balustrade and cut string stone stairs. The doorway to No 7A opens into a hall with a Doric column screen and a wrought iron balustraded staircase. The first-floor rooms in No 7, located in the corner and at the rear, preserve original plasterwork along with some neo-Georgian additions, including an ornate marble chimneypiece in the Louis XV style.
