Description

The Wellington Barracks East Guardhouse is a guardhouse built around 1833 by Sir Frederick Smith, with Philip Hardwick as the consultant. It is constructed of stucco and has a slate roof. This Grecian Doric guardhouse-lodge is located at the east gate entrance to the parade ground from Birdcage Walk and is a single-storey building that is six windows long.

The guardhouse features projecting entrance bays on the north and south sides, which are supported by Greek Doric columns in antis. These columns carry entablatures with pediments and architraved doorways, although the doorway facing Birdcage Walk is blocked. At the west end, there is a tetrastyle Greek Doric portico that leads to the entrance of the guardroom, which includes a panelled door and a fanlight set within an architrave, flanked by pilasters.

The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes set in architraves, with both the Birdcage Walk and parade ground sides articulated by Doric pilasters that support an entablature and blocking course. Additionally, there is an in antis Greek Doric portico at the east end.
