Description
58 and 58A Petty France are a pair of terraced houses dating from the earlier 18th century, and subsequently altered. They are constructed of stuccoed brick, with a mansard roof covered in tiles to the upper pitch and slate to the lower. The front facade has three windows per floor. The ground floor has been altered, featuring a carriageway on the left and a shop window, likely from the later 19th century, on the right. Above, the windows are segmental-headed and have architraves, flush framed sash windows with glazing bars. A band runs between the first and second floors, and there is a parapet above. Dormers have casement windows.
At the rear is a late 19th-century mews arrangement surrounding a former open yard that is now roofed and enclosed. The ground floor of the mews provided accommodation for carriages, while the first floor contained stables and a tack room, originally accessed by a ramp (now a concrete staircase installed in 1946). Living accommodation for grooms and others was located on the second floor. The mews is constructed of painted brick, with a steel truss roof and partial glazing. The windows are recessed sashes. The stable floors are cobbled. Balconies provide access to the first and second-floor accommodation. A reused staircase with turned balusters and column newels is present. The stables include Dutch doors.
